FOREBEARS is a series of abstract sculptures made of high-fired stoneware. Rather than using traditional glazes which coat the surface with a layer of color, I chose oxides that would sink into the surface of the forms. In this way, the textures and pattern are what provide the variation in color, much like engraving does in print-making.
The abstract forms are familiar but not specific. Perhaps they were found in geological strata of an ancient forest. Or maybe they were homes abandoned by a prehistoric mollusk.
